SUMMARY:Two More Roadshows for 2026
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce that the funders of the Grassroots Heritage in Scotland project\, Historic Environment Scotland and the National Lottery Heritage Fund\, have granted us an extension to the project to allow us to use our underspend to fund two more roadshows. We will be revisiting the locations of our first two roadshows to celebrate community heritage\, share the findings of our nationwide tour and find out from grassroots heritage groups what they want to see from us next. The full programmes of speakers will be announced in January 2026 but registrations are open on Eventbrite already. SUMMARY:Grassroots Heritage in Scotland Online Training
DESCRIPTION:Since September 2024\, the Scottish Community Heritage Alliance’s Grassroots Heritage in Scotland project has held 12 roadshows and 6 online discussion sessions\, inviting community heritage organisations nationwide to tell us about their current situation and the challenges they face.  Based on the leading issues to emerge from these\, we have produced 3 online training sessions\, designed as a starting point for solutions and assistance to help tackle these challenges.  They are delivered by people and organisations that specialise in specific\, relevant aspects of the topics\, and there will be opportunities to ask each of our speakers for additional guidance on your heritage group’s circumstances. \nThe dates are:\n21st October – Funding\n6th November – Volunteering\n11th November – Communications \nThe sessions are open to all\, free to attend and are delivered by Zoom at 2-4pm on the specified dates.  We invite you to sign up to as many of these as you would like\, simply by emailing scottishcommunityheritgae@gmail.com.  The programmes for each of the sessions can be found below. \n21st October: Funding\n2pm: Introduction\n2.15pm: Grant Funding\, led by Frazer Gibson\, Grants Team at Historic Environment Scotland.\nThe funding session opens with a presentation on grant funding\, with a particular focus on funding offered by Historic Environment Scotland\, as well as signposting to others.\n2.45pm: Budgeting\, led by Dr Susan Kruse\, Treasurer for the Scottish Community Heritage Alliance\nA tutorial on how to cost a project.\n3.15pm: Social Enterprise\, led by Chris Martin\, CEO of Social Enterprise Scotland\nAn introduction to social enterprise in the heritage sector\, the benefits it can bring\, how to get started and what support is available.\n3.40pm: Diversify Your Funding Sources\, led by Martin Sim\, from Stonehaven Fireballs Association\nA case study of success in supporting a community heritage association through a varied range of fundraising methods. This is a pre-recorded presentation as Erin is unable to make the date.\n3pm: Volunteer Practice\, led by Volunteer Scotland\nAn introduction to volunteer practice\, including volunteer management\, policies and conditions.\n3.30pm: Volunteering Troubleshooting\, led by the Scottish Community Heritage Alliance\nVolunteer recruitment\, retention and management are not without challenges. DESCRIPTION:We have been busy making arrangements for the spring series of Grassroots Heritage in Scotland Roadshows. We will be continuing our tour of the nation\, with roadshows taking place in Glasgow to North Ayrshire\, Central Scotland\, Dundee & Fife\, Highland\, and Aberdeenshire & Moray. \nGlasgow to North Ayrshire Roadshow\, 1st February\, Johnstone Town Hall\nCentral Region Roadshow\, 15th February\, Cochrane Hall\, Alva\nDundee & Fife Roadshow\, 8th March\, venue TBC\nHighland Roadshow\, 15th March\, Dingwall Academy\nAberdeenshire & Moray Roadshow\, 22nd March\, The Barn Arts\, Banchory \nThe island roadshows\, to be held in the Western Isles and Orkney & Shetland\, will follow in the summer\, when we hope for the weather to be kind to us for the ferries. Both of these will be hybrid events to allow everyone from the far reaches of the regions to attend\, even if they are not able to physically get there. We also plan to hold a special online workshop on Heritage in Placemaking in the summer\, open to all\, as well as the Grassroots Heritage in Scotland Training Sessions. \nWe have a number of speakers confirmed for our spring roadshows: \nGlasgow to North Ayrshire\nIain Ross Wallace\, Scottish Stonemasons’ Marks\nA talk about the Scottish Stonemasons’ Marks project with a particular local focus on Paisley Abbey.\nMarjorie Perotto\, Historic Environment Scotland\nA talk on the Our Past\, Our Future strategy. Marjorie’s presentation will be immediately followed by a special discussion session to gather your views on the strategy. \nCentral Region\nRussell Clegg\, The Living Memory Association\nAn introduction to the LMA’s new Resourcing Reminiscence project\, which offers advice\, support and training to groups in reminiscence and oral history capture.\nLisa Snedden\, Keep Scotland Beautiful\nA talk about Our Heritage\, Our Future\, Keep Scotland Beautiful’s community-based programme exploring heritage and climate change themes.\nROOK – Rescuers Of Old Kilmadock \nHighland\nJim Mackay\, The Kirkmichael Trust\nJim will be the first speaker of the day to focus on the important topic of fundraising.\nFiona Mackenzie\, Strathnaver Museum\nFiona will also speak on the subject of fundraising.\nIain Leith\, Wick Heritage\nA talk about succession planning for heritage groups. \nWe are on the verge of confirming further speakers and they will be announced on our Facebook page as they are confirmed. SUMMARY:Workshop on Gaelic Awareness for Heritage Organisations
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Community Heritage Alliance (SCHA) has organised a free half-day workshop for all its members on Gaelic Awareness for Grassroots Heritage Organisations. It will take place on Tuesday 25th February\, 1-4:30 on Zoom\, led by Brian Ó hEadhra. If you would like to attend\, please email scottishcommunityheritage@gmail.com and a link will be sent out closer to the time. Membership of SCHA is free\, so if you are not a member already\, please first join via our website https://www.scottishcommunityheritagealliance.org/. \nThe half-day engagement session will look at Gaelic heritage across Scotland\, tailored towards increasing awareness and understanding for professionals and volunteers in the community heritage sector. It will include as background an overview of Gaelic history through the ages\, the contemporary context\, with insights to the language itself throughout\, enabling participants to be more confident in their use of spoken Gaelic. The session will provide a range of specific examples of Gaelic heritage in action at a grassroots level\, including from museums\, community groups\, and heritage centres. This will also lead onto a look at existing resources for Gaelic culture and heritage which participants may or may not already be familiar with. \nParticipants will come away from the session being better informed about Gaelic language and culture in general\, and with ideas for the many ways in which they can use and support Gaelic through their own community-focused work. It will also help build connections between groups. \nBrian Ó hEadhra (pron. Breean Ohara) is a cultural advocate\, educator\, and Director of the Traditional Music Forum with over 30 years of experience in Scotland’s Gaelic and traditional arts sectors. A professional singer/musician and Highland tour guide\, he has worked in Gaelic arts and community development with Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Creative Scotland\, promoting greater awareness of Scotland’s rich heritage. \nThe workshop is part of Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2025\, a week of Gaelic activities across Scotland. Funding for the workshop has kindly been provided by Seachdain na Gàidhlig’s Small Grants Fund with support from Bòrd na Gàidhlig\, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic Environment Scotland.

SUMMARY:SCHA Workshop At Scottish Community Heritage Conversations
DESCRIPTION:SCHA’s Chair Seymour Adams and Project Officer Laura Ferguson were in attendance at the Scotland’s Community Heritage Conversations conference on 21st November at The Engine Shed\, Stirling\, delivering a SCHA Grassroots Heritage in Scotland workshop. We brought you photos from around the event hot off the press in last month’s newsletter\, and this month we are delighted to be able to report the results of the workshop. \n44 participants\, both online and in the room\, joined in to hear about the Grassroots Heritage in Scotland Roadshows and answer our Mentimeter questions. At the start of the workshop\, Seymour and Laura presented the group with a list of the nine types of support that our roadshow attendees to date have highlighted as priorities for community heritage groups in Scotland. The workshop participants were asked to vote for the ones they considered most important\, in order that we could rank them according to the opinion in the room. The results showed the prevailing order of importance as: \nFunding applications (40%)\nReusing historical buildings (15%)\nVolunteer recruitment (10%)\nClimate readiness (10%)\nRepresenting intangible heritage (10%)\nTechnological support (5%)\nDiversity (5%)\nNetworking (5%)\nTourism experiences (0%) \nThe Roadshows on Grassroots Heritage presentation then followed\, which provided detail on the discussions behind the list that the workshop participants had been asked to vote on and highlighted the main concerns among community heritage groups in each of the different regions in which we had held a roadshow to date. \nA discussion session invited participants to add their own suggestions of the type of support that community heritage organisations need. They were then offered the opportunity to vote on their own list. The results showed the order of importance among the group as: \nMoney/financial sustainability (33%)\nPreservation of digital content (22%)\nFuture thinking (11%)\nSpeaking to other groups (11%)\nSharing our message (6%)\nUpskilling of volunteers (6%)\nEngaging diverse audiences (6%)\nFree training (6%)\nSupport for volunteers (0%)\nShared resources (0%)\nTransport (0%)\nInsurance (0%) \nFinally\, participants were asked to submit “What words do you associate with community heritage today?” to our word cloud\, resulting in the colourful and thought-provoking display below. \nWe would like to thank Historic Environment Scotland for inviting SCHA to hold this workshop at Scotland’s Community Heritage Conversations and all of the workshop attendees who joined us in Stirling and online.
